The so-called “protruding ears”, which leads to disproportionate size and shape of the ears, affects 2% to 5% of the population, according to the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

The otoplasty is the most indicated plastic surgery to resolve this problem. The procedure is performed through an incision behind the ear. During the surgery, the doctor takes a small part of the cartilage and carries out a procedure so that the ears are in the most appropriate position, bringing the ears closer to the head.

After the physician closes the incisions, a dressing is placed around the ears for 24 hours to protect the surgery area.

The results of otoplasty, in general, are very positive, and the surgery does not leave deep scars, considering that the stitches are hidden behind the ears. However, not every case will achieve 100% symmetry. After all, nature itself is asymmetric.

How and when to undergo a surgery

The sooner the surgery is carried out, the better the result. Parents are usually uncertain about the best time to perform otoplasty in children born with prominent ears, after all, the otoplasty is surgical intervention.

However, the age group from 5 to 7 years old is suitable to undergo surgery. At this age range, the child’s ear is fully developed, and, over time, the disproportion and discomfort can increase.

Postoperative Care

When the surgeon closes the incisions, a helmet-shaped dressing is put around the surgery area for 24 hours. After this period, the helmet-shaped dressing is replaced by a strap that needs to stay in place for one month for the successful outcome of the surgery. Indeed, the patient must also take some care. Such as:

  • Avoid exposure to the sun;
  • Do not play sports;
  • Avoid moving and scratching the area;

Upon following these guidelines, the patient prevents the stitches from opening and infections, and the need to undergo a new surgery.
